Call from the past

Hello,

Right now I am listening to Nirvana, specifically the song "Come as you are." I love that song. In fact, I love all of their songs. I definitely miss the nineties.

Today I got a call from and old friend, whom I haven't seen for almost a couple of years now. We used to work at Enterprise. Those were the days, lol.

He called me up and offered me to go to a concert. Cindy Lauper and the B-52s here in Berkeley. The only reason I didn't go was because I had to work. But when I got to work, it turns out the my coworkers would have gladly covered for me. I can't believe that I didn't go. I really missed out.

A Nice Saturday

Aloha,

Today was a lazy day. I have no homework to even think about this weekend because I just finished my finals on Friday. Unfortunately I have summer school starting on Monday so that means that I only have the weekend in between to enjoy. But I can't tell you how nice it is to not have any class to think about.

I watched a movie this morning and then I went to a bellydance class. It was held at a beautiful yoga studio in Palo Alto, which is actually right next door to Facebook. I paid for ten sessions. I could take bellydance, yoga or both. I am happy about that. I have a gym membership. Although I do go sometimes, I prefer workouts that have less impact on my body such as yoga or dance.

I enjoyed the dance class a lot today and felt better after. I felt more free. I would have loved to have sat at the cafe after and enjoyed the afternoon, but I had to hurry off to work. Too bad.

No Sos Vos Soy Yo

Hello There My Lovelies,

When I was living in Spain an Argentine film came out in theaters called No Sos Vos Soy Yo. It starred Diego Peretti.

There is a growing Argentine community in Spain. Ever since there was a financial crisis around 2001 in Argentina many Argentines have decided to immigrate to Spain.

Argentina used to be a wealthier country. Back then Europeans used to immigrate to Argentina and start families. Now that there is a financial crisis there, many Argentines with European family ties are moving to Spain and getting their passports, usually from Spain or Italy.

While I was living in Barcelona I met a lot of people from Argentina. I worked, lived and hung out with them. They speak in a different accent and use different expressions. And I came to love their way of expressing themselves, especially their special way of cursing. I also think I got along with them so well is because they raved about the United States and talking about how they wish they could go to America.

Anyway, like me they were homesick. I remember days when I wanted to go back home so bad that even watching an American film would make me literally cry. (Even though it had horrible voice overs). The Argentines I knew would always tell me that they would do anything just to take a trip back to Buenos Aires. They did not feel at home in Spain. They looked at me and laughed at me for living in Spain when I was an American citizen. They would always tell me: "Spain is a third world country. We would love the chance to come to America. Why do you want to live here ? We don't want to live here. We HAVE to live here." One of the guys I worked with named Luciano (family ties in Italy) came over and had to live for almost a year without his wife before he could send for her. It was sad to see how lonely he got and how he missed her. But she eventually came over.

Anyway, when this film came out in theaters, they were so extactic. It was like a little piece of home for them. It was like someone finally understood them. I was supposed to see it but I was too busy packing to come back home that I missed out. That was in June 2005. I didn't get to see it until a couple of days ago. So I have been waiting for three years.

When I came back here, I was looking and looking for the film but it wasn't available. I was so sad. And if there was a copy floating around, it was expensive as hell,in the wrong format or both.

Last week I finally found a copy of it and ordered it. I enjoyed watching it. I barely understood anything they said in the movie because they spoke so fast and used words and expressions I wasn't familiar with. So I watched it with Spanish subtitles (English wasn't available.) Luckily I understood most of it just fine.

Basically this doctor played by Diego Peretti has a beautiful girlfriend and a nice apartment. They get married and she goes to Miami and tells him she'll send for him. So he prepares for the trip by quitting his job, selling his apartment and his car.

On the way to the airport she calls him and tells him not to come because she cheated on him and doesn't want to be with him anymore. Therefore he has no job, place to stay or car. And no wife of course. He gets his job back, but due to his emotional state he accidentally tries to cut open a patient without anesthesia. So, no job after all.

The movie was about how he built his life back up and slowly regained his dignity and got over his wife leaving him. Trying to watch him get back into the dating world was painfully hilarious. He had so many embarassing moments that I could easily identify with.

I remember while I lived in Barcelona and felt so lonely. I had been speaking Spanish non-stop and I just wanted to be an American for a day. I just wanted to talk to another American. So I put an ad out on Loquo (Craigslist for Spaniards, lol) and said that I wanted to talk to another American.

I got two people: An American and an Argentine.

The American was wierd as hell. I don't even know why he wanted to talk to me since he was so against our government and its policies, lol. He was very, very liberal. Dressed like a bum. Acted like one too, and was offering me to hang out and smoke weed. At least we did have some good political debates. Unfortunately he didn't make me feel any less homesick.

Then there was the Argentine. Too bad I forgot his name. He was really nice when he responded to my ad: He told me that he wasn't from the US, but he was from Argentina. (South American is still American, lol) He said that he loved the United States and was a fan of the US (loves our movies) and wanted to talk to an American. That was all I needed to hear, so we met up.

We met up at Starbucks, lol. I forget what we talked about, but we had a really nice time. We met up another time and saw a British film. Then he flew off to Israel and I never heard from him again. I remember when he texted me he would refer to himself as my "Sweet Argentine."

Good times.

Hello Again,

Last night I was listening to the radio, and one of the guys from the band 311 was on. 311 is an alternative band. I love alternative music.

Anyway, the lead singer, Nick Hexum was on and offering love advice. That man is so hot, LOL and I love his deep voice. He has this happy, feel-good vibe going on that makes him that much hotter, lol.

I remember last summer they were doing a concert with Matisyahu (another one of my favorite bands) in Santa Cruz. I was invited to go to it by a total hottie whom I had a huge crush on, who loves the same bands. BUT I had to politely decline because I was in a relationship at the time. Why does that stuff always happen when you're taken ????? I should be taken more often, lol.

I don't know when I'll ever see those two bands together again. I really missed out.

Mi Inspiracion

Hello There My Lovelies,

Okay, so tomorrow is finals and I have two finals back to back. I am not feeling the love on that. Then on Monday I have summer school all over again. I already bought my textbook, brand new. I love the new text book smell. I will be taking Legal Analysis. I am excited because I will learn how to write better for the legal profession.

What else............ A couple of days ago while I was eating lunch close to my internship, I saw a photographic journal display. There were photos with with words in Spanish and then translated to English. There is a huge community here of Latinos, many of them poor, undocumented or both. The topic was about Diabetes and how they take care of themselves, especially if they don't have a good insurance plan. I live in a predominently Hispanic neighborhood where many people only speak Spanish. For example at the taqueria down my street no one speaks English.

Basically these people were given cameras and asked to document their daily lives, relating to this disease. Seeing what they saw, and reading what they felt really touched my heart profoundly.

Especially reading their words in Spanish. The Spanish language is a deep, romantic language and I find it to be more sentimental than in English. Poetry is much better in Spanish than English.

Anyway, as I was saying I was looking at how these people with Diabetes saw life. One guy photographed birds sitting high on an electrical wire. He said that when he's struggling with the disease, the birds on the electrical wire gives him hope to be strong and "fly above" his problems.

Another person took a picture of road that lead down only one path. He said that with diabetes he can chose to go down the same path as always, but that path will only lead to death unless you take another path.

The picture that actually brought tears to my eyes was the one with a heart-shaped locket that a woman carried around with her daughter's ashes. She also wrote a famous quote "If Tears Could Build A Stairway and Memories a Lane I'd Walk Right Up To Heaven and Bring You Home Again"  She said that it was her inspiration to keep living and fighting the disease.

That display really got me emotional. But I was glad that I had inspiration that day.

Lazy

Hello There My Lovelies,

Today I was as lazy as a sloth. I spent half the day in bed and it was lovely. Then I decided to get out of bed and make myself some Mac N' Cheese and finish watching My Cousin Vinny. I love that movie. Vinny, played by Jose Pesci is from New York. He kinda reminded me of my friend Henry who lives in New York. (Even though Henry isn't really like him.) I really would like to visit New York. I would even consider moving there if the right job comes along.

Yesterday I went to a meeting for PASCCO, a paralegal organization that I recently joined. I had such a good time. It was held at the Hilton hotel and they had such good food, which is award winning by the way. For desert I had a nice chocolate-hazelnut mousse cake. It was so sumptuous.

There were some good lectures and speeches. We had Tom Campbell come and speak to us about the state and federal budget. He used to be a California politician and a former U.S. House of Reps member. He was also a law professor at Stanford and is currently the dean of the Haas School of Business at U.C Berkley. We were lucky to have him there. He seems like a really nice guy.

When he first started talking about the budget I walked out of the room because I simply did not want to have to listen to how screwed up it is. Especially since I suck at accounting. But I came back after taking a walk and listened to the rest of his speech. I was sorry I left. He gave a really good speech and gave good explanations to why we are facing a budget crisis and what it would take for things to get better. Then he started talking about foreign policy. I had never found such subjects so interesting until I listened to his explanations.

There were also legal job placement companies there and I handed the representatives my resumes and asked for feedback. They were so nice to me and informative. They told me that my resume looks great and that I am on the right track and that I am doing the right thing. One of the guys told me that I was asking the right questions. Now I have to follow up and keep in contact. I am finally proud of handing out my resume. I used to look at it and think it was a hopeless case. But I am proud of myself for learning how to put a good legal resume together. I did it all myself.

It was pretty much exactly around last time this year that I decided that I wanted to pursue paralegal studies. I remember when I first started calling legalplacement agencies and when I first started going on interviews. I faced a lot of rejection. It was painful. I thought that my university degree in business would be enough to work in a law firm. And technically it is. But it's not how the real world works. It's a competitive field, and there are so many people out there that are way more qualified than me.

Many firms value experience, as much if not more than your education. And I didn't have any at the time. It's all been a slow, step-by-step process. But at least I am not starting at the bottom anymore.

Ave Maria

Hello All,

I am feeling better, but still not 100%. It's been rough going to work, school and my internship. I just could not afford to cancel it all. My life depends on getting paid and finishing this quarter nicely. At least it sure feels like it. Luckily I took a little time off my internship to rest. I plan to sleep in this Sunday.

What else. I was thinking back to my days in Barcelona. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aW_ZH0rDrI0

That is a link to one of my fave Spanish singers, David Bisbal. He was popular when I was there. I went on a date with a guy that looked like him while I lived in Barcelona. We had sangria. It was a fun date. He told me his father knew Fidel Castro. I didn't believe him until I saw the house he lived in. Very wealthy, so it was probably true.

I still listen to David Bisbal. When I was in Barcelona my roommate took me to his mother's house and she introduced his music to me. She kept saying his name and dancing to his music. She was a nice lady. During Christmas of 2004 I was bedridden with the stomach flu for a couple of weeks. She took care of me and made sure that I was okay. I used to go over to her house on Sundays for Paella. She was a nice lady. She only spoke Spanish so I learned very fast. She told me that she considered me as her daughter. I will try to get back in contact with her.

I really want to go back to Barcelona and then some. I am still in my twenties (THANK GOD) and single. Most of my debts are paid. Why not. I really hope that I can travel and explore various countries again. It's something I don't want to give up on.

Not Feeling the Love

I am gonna make this short. Whatever is going around, I have it. I have a really nice cold, probably the flu. I have no choice but to go to work and school so I make sure I pump myself up with some meds. It has been really unpleasant.

My friend offered to stop by and bring me meds yesterday. I told him I would be fine. I should've taken him up on his offer. I was burning up last night. That hasn't happened to me in a long time. I didn't know that things would get worse. I forgot what it was like to have a high fever.

Not having Nyquil around last night was a huge mistake. So instead I took a swig of Baileys to calm me down. Then I sat in a cold tub of water for a while.

I can't wait to feel better.

Chicken Salad

Hello There My Lovelies :)

I read a quote the other day that I really liked that read : "You could have all the mayonaise in the world, but you can't make chicken salad out of chicken shit."

Ain't that the truth.

Hello there my lovelies.........

Well, I don't know if I have a whole lot to say. It is just one of those days where I feel like I want to be lazy and don't want to do anything at all. I was totally tuning out the teacher in my civil litigation class today. Talking about filing motions did not turn me on, lol.

After class I went to my internship just for a couple of hours. All my boss and I really did was talk and talk and talk, lol. It was nice. Yesterday was my first day and she made me a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Nice way to start off an internship, don't you think? I know things will get busy. I know that I am gonna learn a lot. Lord knows I need the experience.

I was supposed to go to dance class tonite but instead I went to a Paralegal reception that is held at the end of the spring quarter here at school. I saw a lot of classmates and former classmates.

My favorite teacher sat at the same table as me. He paid me a compliment and told me that I was a very good student and that I was the type of student that every teacher should have. That was a very nice thing to say.

There was also a raffle held and I got a gift certificate for a restaurant as well as certificates for frozen yogurt. Due to the horrendous gas prices here, I welcome any free thing that I can get.

I am starting to panic about the high gas prices.  $4.55 a gallon today. I know that it is going to hit five dollars by the end of the summer. I am angry. I HAVE to commute by car.

Anyway, that is all for now.

Interesting Legal Tidbits

Hello There My Lovelies,

So I am currently taking legal courses as you already know. My teacher is good about explaining laws and procedures to us. But he likes to go off tangent sometimes and entertain us. And sometimes he likes to throw in wierd legal tidbits that I don't think that I would need to refer to in the future unless I am dealing with some seriously mentally challenged people.

Like the other day we were talking about getting a bill signed in as law. And he decided to go off tangent and tell us that in Michigan it is illegal to "have carnal knowledge of a bird."

First of all............ How do you catch a bird so that you can molest it ? Second of all....... WHY ?????? Who had the brilliant idea to take this to the governor ? I didn't think that sexual harrassment of birdies was a big deal. Who gets titillated after looking at a bird ? Another girl chimed in that in the south it is illegal to have sex with an animal under 45 pounds, lol. So what if the animal in question was just fat when the act was committed and then lost some weight ? How do you prove that ?

Last year in one of my classes he was talking about beastiality. Don't ask
me how we got on the subject.  Oh yeah, it was something about defenses you can use in court. And he said that consent in an animal is not a defense for beastiality because as my teacher said " Fido is protected under law." LOL. Just because the dog seems willing doesn't make it okay or legal. I was just shocked that we were even talking about it.

But necrophelia is legal, at least in CA. I don't get it. For sure I thought such a nasty act would be illegal.

And today we were talking about legal ages of marrying in CA. In CA (where I live) it is perfectly legal to get married at any age as long as your parents, the superior court, or both consent. I was told all other states have age restrictions as to the age of consent with parental permission.

Anyway, I have some homework to do before my next class. Ciao.

Hello,

Today was a relaxing day. I went to church. I usually sit way in the back. I am usually there in the back row with my friend.

Today a young lady comes and sits a couple of chairs over from me. People usually spread out in the back and when they see that I am sitting in the back row, go find another empty row for themselves.

This lady comes and sits down with her three year old boy almost next to me. Nice boy, well behaved.

She had this huge tattoo on her right arm, lol. I usually like to hog the back row, but she didn't bother me. In fact, even though we didn't talk much to each other it was nice to have her there.

After the service I went to my friend's house where we ate and talked about boys, lol. After I got tired of that I helped her with her resume.

She and I went to the same high school, same college (same major) and now I converted her, lol. I convinced her to become a paralegal. She introduced me to her church and I convinced her to be a paralegal, lol. I am proud that I played a part in that.

So anyway, I helped her with her resume and I was amazed that I actually gave good advice. I don't know about regular resumes but I do know a few things about a legal resumes. And she was happy with my advice. So that makes me happy.

What else.............. Oh yes........ I bought new bedding a couple of days ago. I was so happy too. Turns out that I have a queen size bed, and not a full size. I bought the wrong size sheets and I have to go back and exchange it. I was looking forward to new bedding tonite. Oh well.

Cosmetics and Majors

Hello All,

Yesterday was pay day, and I definitely spent some money ! I bought some new makeup. One of my favorite brands is Rimmel, as it reminds me of my time in Austria (Even though it is British). I love their advertising, and their wild colors. I bought a couple of their new items on sale. I tried it out today and it gave me a little boost. I bought this dark purple sparkly nail polish. I also got these cool combos of eyeshadow swirled into one compact.

I also got a manicure as well. I hadn't done that in over a year. The manicurist also gave me a good hand massage. Well, I offered to pay her extra for it. She painted my nails a dark red. I think that I am ready to try out black nail polish soon. It seems like the celebs are doing it and it is starting to grow on me.

Today was more of a lazy day. I went to a barbeque for a school event. I was inducted into an honor society and they had a bbq today so that we could talk to other members. It was nice talking to each other. You have to have at least a 3.5 GPA to be a member. Everyone was nice to talk to.

The members there all have big goals. We were talking about applying to colleges and how difficult it is to get into Ivy League schools. One girl was a beauty pageant contestant in Asia and recently quit that so that she could focus on getting into Stanford. Another guy was talking about how he applied to all the Ivy League schools and how he finally got accepted into UC Berkley.

When I was at the university, I really didn't have a concept of what I would be doing in the future. I went to college because I didn't know what else to do and because my parents advised me to do it. My grades were okay, good enough to pursue a masters. However, they are not Ivy League material. I never thought that I would someday want to go back and pursue my education. I didn't know what my passion was.

I majored in Business with a concentration in Marketing. I also got a minor in Spanish. I never was inspired by Business. I did not like any of my business classes except for Business Law. I did enjoy some of my general ed courses.

I did my work in college and just hoped that I would get a job after graduation. But my internships in relation to that major flopped. Interviews for business positions never worked out.

But I did love my minor. I loved my Latin American History class. As hard as that class was, I learned so much. At the time, I did not speak Spanish, yet the course was only taught in Spanish. I don't know how I ever made it out with a passing grade, but I did. In that class I ended up writitng a paper in Spanish. I also gave a presentation in Spanish about famous Latin American artists. I loved that project a lot and still have it.

I didn't find my passion in legal studies until last year. A lot of things have happened in life that have led up to me finally deciding that I want to pursue a profession in the legal field. I didn't just arrive at this conclusion. I don't know how else to describe it. Years of trying out different things finally brought me here. Maybe I will talk about it in another entry.

Anyway, that is all for now.

A door has closed but another has opened

Hello All,

I will make this fast as I am hungry and need to eat before my next class.

Yesterday was my last day at my volunteer position at the community legal agency. I got to finish up some projects and say good bye. I was there for six months. I worked in Immigration. But I talked to the guy in Housing before I left for a while. He asked for my contact information so that I could possibly come back. We talked about his responsibilities. He was asking why I never did anything for his department. It felt nice to be appreciated. I can't tell you how much I learned from volunteering there. We served low income people. I imagine that one of the worst feelings is being poor, being in a bind, and not being able to afford a lawyer to help you out of a messy situation. It felt good to give back to the community. I had always wanted to do something like that.

Next Tuesday I start my new internship, unrelated to the last agency I worked for. I'm sure I'll elaborate on it later. I am excited about the new things I will learn and new people that I will meet.

Anyway, I will write more later.

Hello There My Lovelies,

Okay, so as I was showering this moring, I feel my legs stinging as the water hit me. I looked down, and realized that I got a bad sunburn on my legs because I wore a dress yesterday. They were really red. But whatever because my legs are white as Casper the Ghost and any color (even if it is red) is better than white in my opinion.

I went to the Law Library again to work on my research take home midterm. I didn't see the hot guy, but I did get a little closer to finishing the project. I am upset about it though because the teacher made it really hard. He wasn't clear on the instructions, and some of the case decisions he asked me to find and write about aren't even published yet. He told us that we could conduct our research in our own school library, but I get there today and find out that the books are out of date and therefore useless. So I have no choice but to go to the law library, and it's out of my way.

On top of that he's asking us to interpret some of the CA Codes in our own words when they are monstrously long and written in legalese that even my own teacher admits to being hard to understand. And he's an attorney AND judge. When I read the laws for my homework, I ask myself why the HELL people that write the laws have to beat around the bush, use run on sentences and then top it off with Latin expressions (a language that is dead).

I get to class today and find out that I am not the only one that wanted to pull my hair out. It's so not fair. Especially since the teacher is not available to answer our questions and forbids us to talk to our other classmates. Good thing I did extra credit.

What else............yes.......tomorrow I am supposed to see Sex and the City with my friend. We are going to get dressed up and make it a girls night out. Dress up, have a drink, and maybe find a group of guys to talk to. Last time we were out she got the phone number of the cute cop guarding the Gucci store.

Anywho, back to pulling my hair out over my homework.

Opa !

Hello There My Lovelies,

Okay, I will try to make this fast as I have an assload of homework to finish. My complaint is due tomorrow. Not feeling the love.

Today is Sunday and I wore my cute new sundress to church along with my new eyeshadow. I felt really pretty. I haven't felt like that in a long time. Every woman should feel pretty. As I was leaving my roommate took a look and was like "Where are you going ?" LOL.

The service this morning was really nice. I was late but made it in time to sing a little. The sermon was nice. At first I didn't feel it was relevant to my life, but then he said something that blew me away.

The pastor was talking about things that prevent us from having a personal relationship with God. Of course he said "material things". Another thing that could keep us from having a relationship with God is our own dreams and expectations. He said " Some of you had dreams that haven't happened. Some of you hoped to be married and that hasn't happened for you yet. Some of you expected to still be married. Some of you thought you would be healthy. These expectations and your own life plans can prevent you from letting go of the past and from forgiving those that hurt you. This disappointment can also prevent you from reaching out to God and asking Him to lead you in the direction that you are meant to go."

I don't know why but that really made me emotional, and one of the women in front of me was also wiping her tears. There are things that have happened to me in the past that I am having such a hard time letting go of. If you are anything like me, you always ask the questions of "what if". Or "Maybe I could have done things differently". My expectations of my future haven't worked out. Plans flopped. It happened to me and it happens to all of us. All I want is to let go and be happy.

So......... after the service my friend and I went to the Greek Festival. It was held at a Greek church that my friend was married at. That was so much fun ! I blew all my cash on Greek food. I was going to order the calamari, but decided on having Gyros instead. After that we had dessert and sat down and talked to a couple of people. While I was there I felt like I was in Greece, lol. Beautiful day, good food, Greek dancing, festive people, Greek merchandise......... They were selling some bellydance outfits that were waaaay overpriced. Come to think of it, stuff at festivals tend to be overpriced anyway.

The Greek dancing was wonderful. I couldn't watch all of it, but I enjoyed watching the dancers perform. I have been lucky enough to attend two Greek weddings in my life. The dancing is one of the advantages of attending Greek events.

Anyway, that is all for now. I better get back to my homework.
