Hello All,
Okay, so today is August 4th. On this day I believe in 1942 Anne Frank and her family were discovered in the Secret Annex in Amsterdam and taken to the camps.
Miep Gies was the woman that hid the Franks. She is still alive today, and almost 100 !
She says that on this day, she closes the curtains, locks her door, and does not answer the phone all day. She uses the day to mourn the loss of her friends. She has been doing this for over 65 years.
She is such an incredible woman. I would give anything to have a chance to meet her. If it weren't for her, none of us would've read Anne Frank's diary.
I started reading the diary when I was in middle school. I read it again a few years ago after I bought another copy at the store at Mauthausen. I felt that I could understand her a lot more then than when I was in middle school.
I still want to visit Amsterdam very badly. When I start my career I will definitely save for it. I have never stopped dreaming about going to Amsterdam and visiting the Anne Frank House.
What most people don't realize is that Anne's real home before she moved into the Annex was on Merwedeplein 34 (I may have the wrong number). It is not open to the public, rather a safe haven for writers from other countries that come to avoid persecution. Last I heard, there was a writer from Algeria that stayed in the house. I wonder who is there now.
The last known footage of Anne Frank was her on the balcony of that house witnessing a new couple that had just gotten married.
Anyway, off to class for me. Finals are in two days.
